At Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, we often hear parents lament that their child seems to get more cavities than other kids. Our usual answer? Maybe they do, but maybe not.
We know it can seem that way. But it is a proven fact that children are more prone to cavities than adults are. How one child’s dental health stacks up against another is difficult to measure!
A child’s baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, are not as tough as their permanent teeth. The enamel is not as hard. That makes it much easier for acid-causing bacteria to eat through it. And when that happens, the result is a cavity.
So what is a responsible parent to do? We recommend the following:
- Limit sugar intake. We know it’s easier said than done, but it does make a difference. Sugar can cause acid and bacteria to grow. Some sweets are pretty obvious, but it’s important to read labels: sucrose is the biggie, but also look for fructose and glucose.
- Feed your child a good diet. That means foods that are rich in vitamins A, C, and D. Calcium supplements are also a good idea.
- Consider dental sealants. Sealants are a plastic coating we can paint on your child’s teeth as an extra layer of protection.
- Brush and floss daily. This is of utmost importance. Remember, dental sealants to not replace the need to brush and floss!
