At Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, the safety of each of our young patients is always a top priority. We want their dental appointments to be a positive experience. But some kids have a difficult time, and in certain cases we recommend sedation dentistry.
It is not a recommendation we make lightly. Our entire team, after all, is trained in helping kids feel comfortable during their treatments. Most of the time we succeed; in fact, speaking calmly (but firmly) is usually enough.
But some children are just too fearful of the dentist, or might have a hard time sitting still for their procedure. In other instances, the procedure is long and involved. In such cases – and always after consultation with parents – we use sedation dentistry.
We have two types that we use on our young patients. One is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, which is very effective in relaxing children. It is safe and effective and wears off quickly. Nitrous oxide has been used in patients of all ages for more than one hundred years.
Another option is oral conscious sedation. This is a stronger option than nitrous oxide. The patient takes a sedative an hour or so before their appointment. By the time we begin, they’ll be awake, but relaxed and drowsy. Afterward, you’ll need to keep a close eye on them until the sedatives wear off completely. A lot of kids take a nap when it’s over.
