Dental sealants are an added layer of protection for children’s teeth. We recommend them for kids between the ages of five and fourteen. You will note that during this time frame, baby teeth will fall out and permanent teeth will come in. Baby and adult teeth all benefit from sealants.
Sealants are a plastic coating that we paint onto the chewing surfaces of the molars. They fill in the grooves and crevices in teeth that are difficult to clean through brushing alone. These grooves and crevices tend to be breeding grounds for the bacteria that causes cavities.
Safe BPA Levels
Some parents are concerned about Bisphenol A, or BPA, that is found in dental sealants (and most plastics). Studies have shown that sealants contain safe levels of BPA. The American Dental Association goes so far as to say that the average person gets 100% BPA just from breathing!
Dental sealants can protect young teeth from cavities for years to come. A study by the Centers for Disease Control states that they prevent up to eighty percent of cavities for two years after application. After that, sealants can be re-applied.
Along with regular checkups at our office, daily brushing and flossing is the best way to maintain healthy teeth and gums. We always stress that cavities are preventable, but you have to work at it!
