Children are prone to getting cavities, just like anyone else. But young teeth can get an extra layer of protection with the application of dental sealants, available at Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas.
Sealants are a plastic material that we use to coat the chewing surface of the molars. This helps to protect them from the bacteria and acids that cause tooth decay. The chewing areas tend to have deep fissures in them, making them more vulnerable to decay. So the sealants are good protection against that.
Of course, having dental sealants does not make teeth bulletproof. Kids still have to floss and brush their teeth twice a day to remove food particles, and prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar on their teeth.
Dental sealants are usually clear. But they are available in white, and in tinted shades, too. They are placed on the tooth at our office. Before sealants go on, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned with rotating dental brushes, rinsed with an acidic solution, and thoroughly dried.
Dental sealants are usually associated with pediatric dentistry. But they can be applied to adult teeth, too. If any moms or dads are interested, they should ask their dentist.
