Fight Tooth Decay!

Tooth decay in children is distressingly common. One out of every four children who are not yet school-age has at least one cavity! At Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, we do everything we can to keep young teeth clean and cavity-free.

What Is A Cavity?

A cavity is a hole in tooth enamel. The most common cause of cavities is the acids produced in the mouth, after naturally-occuring bacteria mix with sugars. These acids begin to erode the enamel, and can eventually cause tooth decay.

That doesn’t mean it happens automatically. It does mean that teaching your kids to brush their teeth, and to develop good dental habits like regular brushing, are essential to a healthy mouth.

What Can You Do?

In addition to establishing good dental habits, there are other things you can do to prevent tooth decay in your kids.

  • Baby Bottle. Tooth decay can begin even when your child is still very small. Never allow your young one to go to sleep with a baby bottle. When that happens, the sugars and carbohydrates in things like milk and juice are on teeth for long periods of time. The same holds true with sippy cups.
  • Brushing and Flossing. Before kids are able to do it on their own, it’s your job to start brushing and flossing their teeth twice a day. Be sure to use a toothpaste with fluoride. Even before their teeth come in you should be cleaning their gums, though toothpaste isn’t essential at that point.
  • Regular Dental Checkups. We like to see youngsters in our office no later than their first birthday, or when their first tooth comes in – whichever comes first. We can apply dental sealants as an added layer of protection.
