As soon as your child has teeth, the possibility of cavities is there. That’s why the team at Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas wants to see kids for a checkup as soon as their first tooth comes in – and maybe even before that.
Early dental checkups are the best way for parents to prevent cavities in their children. When tooth decay begins, it can lead to all sorts of complications, including difficulty concentrating, and certain medical issues later on in life.
The American Dental Association says that children should see the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Even if no teeth have erupted by the age of one, we like to see youngsters to examine their gums and jaw, to make sure that things are developing as they should. If there are teeth by then, we can look for any signs of decay, mouth issues, or other problems.
Those are the obvious dental health benefits of bringing your child in for a checkup by the age of one. Less obvious is that it helps the child to understand the importance of seeing the dentist on a regular basis. We can encourage proper brushing, which in turn helps to establish good dental care at home.
It’s important that kids keep their baby teeth for as long as possible. Ideally they will fall out on their own, usually starting around the age of seven or so. Kids with health baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, do better in their speech development, as well as in chewing food.
