When a baby is born, he or she already has a full set of primary teeth in the jaw, and they will begin to emerge, on average, between the age of six months to one year. At Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, it’s our job to help parents keep them healthy.
There are twenty of these primary teeth in all, and in most kids they’ve all come in by the age of three. They are really important in the child’s development: they are there for smiling and chewing, of course, but they also play a role in speaking. Just as important, they act as placeholders for the permanent teeth that begin to come in around the age of seven. Most often, kids begin to lose their teeth in the same order they came in.
We recommend bringing your child in for a first checkup no later than their first birthday. If teeth start coming in before that, as they often do, then that’s the time for that first trip to the dentist.
At that first visit, we’ll check for any signs of cavities. We’ll also show parents the best ways to clean the child’s teeth. When they’re really young it’s too soon to brush, but baby’s gums can still be cleaned with a soft cloth. Once the teeth start coming in you can brush them with a baby-sized toothbrush and tiny amount of toothpaste.
