Is it really necessary to take your child to a pediatric dentist? Life would be a little easier if the whole family went to the same practice, regardless of age. At Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, we’re using this blog post to explain what makes pediatric dentists unique.
It isn’t simply a matter of a dentist deciding, “I think I’ll work mostly on children.” Pediatric dentists actually have additional training beyond ordinary dental school, usually another two to three years.
We are specially trained to address issues that are specific to kids. Baby teeth are different from permanent teeth. For one thing, they grow in jaws and skulls that have not fully formed, and a big part of what we do is monitor their development over the years.
Kids use their baby teeth for eating, obviously. But we also think of them as placeholders: they hold the space that their permanent, adult teeth will eventually need. We make sure that their permanent teeth are growing in properly. If there are any issues, we develop a plan to address them.
One of our most important functions is helping parents protect their children’s oral health. We provide advice as the first teeth begin to coming, which usually happens between the first six month to one year of life.
Every child isdifferent, and we have different approaches to each of our young patients. Our goal is to ensure each one has good dental health. Their teeth are meant to last a lifetime.
