Dentist Appointment! Tips For Parents

Most kids don’t like going to the dentist. Most adults don’t, either, but sometimes children need some extra encouragement in order to get them in for a dental checkup. At Summer Kids Dental, we understand that, and have some suggestions for parent with reluctant children.

  • Bring your child in early. Experts agree that a child should have that first visit to the dentist around the time of their first birthday, or when their first tooth comes in. It’s important that their first appointment be a positive experience. That way, they’ll have a better idea what they’re in for further down the road.
  • Distract your child. Many dentists say that part of their job is to know about current cartoons, comic books, pop stars, and movies – in short, to be tuned into children’s popular culture. By talking knowledgeably about these topics, they can spark a conversation their young patient will be interested in. That will make them more comfortable, as well as distracting them from the cleaning and checkup.
  • Reward the child. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool. A post-appointment reward, like a sticker or rub-on tattoo, can be the perfect ending to a dental appointment. It may not make them eager to go next time, but it could make it a little easier.
