Dental sealants are a plastic resin coating that we apply to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. They fill in the pits and grooves in the molars, and are an added layer of protection for tooth enamel.
Of course, no kid likes going to the dentist. Parents should let their kids know that having dental sealants applied to their teeth is completely painless. We paint it on as a liquid and it dries quickly. A curing light may be used for a few seconds to help it dry.
The procedure is painless, but kids will need to have some patience while we do the work. The area where the sealants are to be applied must be completely dry first. We also use a special solution to prepare the area.
Once they’ve been applied, dental sealants do not require any special maintenance. It is still necessary for kids to brush and floss their teeth every day. Don’t worry, brushing for two minutes will not scrape off the sealants.
Dental sealants can last for up to ten years. We will inspect them during checkups, and even if a little gets worn away they can be re-applied. We recommend sealants around the age of six. By the time ten years has gone by, the child’s dental health routine should be well-established.
