The dental health problems facing children can range from mild to serious. In our experience at Summer Kids Dental in Las Vegas, most of these problems are common, and all of them can be resolved by our dentist.
The most common problem in children’s teeth, by far, is decay, better known as cavities. There are several reasons for this. The most obvious is diet: a lot of kids like sugary treats, and don’t yet have a full appreciation of how damaging they can be. Their brushing and flossing isn’t as good as an adults yet, either.
A less-obvious reason for tooth decay in kids is that the enamel on their teeth is not as thick and strong as it will be in the permanent teeth they’ll get later on. In fact it’s about half the thickness of adult tooth enamel. When decay begins, it gets through the enamel faster.
Another issue facing children’s dental health is gum disease. We don’t usually associate gum disease with youth, but it can happen. It’s important to have healthy gums because they support the bone sthat keep teeth in place.
These dental health issues can be avoided by brushing and flossing twice a day. It’s important to choose a toothpaste with fluoride in it, because fluoride helps teeth to re-mineralize, which means replacing lost minerals in the tooth enamel. That, in turn, helps prevent tooth decay.
Dental sealants are an added layer of protection for young teeth. They act as a barrier against the acids that cause tooth decay. Remember, though, that your child still needs to brush and floss.
